For many years, people relied on friends, family, and online reviews to decide where to eat. Today, artificial intelligence now plays a big role in those decisions. More people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI for restaurant recommendations. If your restaurant doesn’t appear in those results, customers may never discover what makes it worth visiting.
In this article, I’ll share insights and steps from my AI Visibility Report. You’ll see how AI platforms decide which local restaurants to recommend.
Why is AI becoming the new restaurant guide?
AI is becoming a trusted restaurant guide because it gives personalized recommendations in seconds. It pulls data from many online sources and understands detailed questions better than traditional search engines.
This is something many business owners are only starting to realize. The way people discover is changing, and businesses need to keep up.
How does AI actually decide where to send you?

It starts with understanding what makes each restaurant unique. The details people share online help shape where a restaurant appears in recommendations.
Some of the signals that influence this include:
- Menu details that show what the restaurant offers
- Customer reviews that describe experiences, dishes, and service
- Business listings that provide important details like location and hours
- Photos and social media mentions that show the restaurant’s atmosphere and identity
- Articles, blogs, and websites that build awareness and credibility
- Customer recommendations that reinforce what a restaurant is known for
The question isn’t only whether your restaurant is good. It’s whether AI understands what makes your restaurant worth recommending.
Where does AI send you for each kind of celebration?
In my study, I tested 25 restaurant-related prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI. Here’s a few of them:
- Where should I celebrate my anniversary in Davao City?
- What is the best Japanese food in Davao City?
- Recommend a Korean restaurant in Davao City
- Recommend an authentic Chinese restaurant in Davao City
- Where can I get great seafood in Davao City?
- What is the best steakhouse in Davao City?
- Where can I get the best pizza in Davao City?
Each platform gave different responses.

Summary of Findings
The type of question influenced the results. Recommendations changed depending on whether the prompt was about a celebration, cuisine, or specific dish.
Why Are Closed Restaurants Still Showing Up on AI?
AI can still recommend restaurants that are no longer operating. That’s not really the platform’s fault. It’s working off whatever data restaurants have provided. If that information hasn’t been updated, the AI has no way of knowing things have changed. That includes something as basic as whether a restaurant is still open.
I actually noticed this while putting together my report. Gemini was still recommending The White House and Claude’s Le Café de Ville. Both have closed. The AI wasn’t making it up.
The gap here wasn’t in technology. It was in the information behind it.
How Can Restaurant Owners Show Up Better in AI Recommendations?

AI pulls from the same sources customers already check. Keeping those sources accurate is the biggest lever an owner has.
Here are a few places to start:
Keep your business information up to date
Make sure your name, address, phone number, business hours, and website are accurate across every platform.
Use clear menu descriptions
Mention your signature dishes, cuisines, and specialties. This helps AI understand what your restaurant is known for.
Encourage authentic customer reviews
Reviews don’t just influence diners. They also reinforce the cuisines, dishes, and experiences your restaurant is associated with.
Share high-quality photos
Upload photos of your food, dining area, and signature dishes to help create a stronger digital identity.
Maintain an active Google Business Profile
Regular updates, photos, and customer engagement make your restaurant easier to find.
Get featured in local blogs and media
Articles, travel guides, and local publications help build credibility and strengthen your online presence.
Stay active on social media
Share your menu, events, and customer experiences consistently. Every post adds to your restaurant’s online story.
Keep your information consistent everywhere
Your website, business listings, social media pages, and review platforms should all tell the same story about your restaurant.
