If you own a restaurant in Davao, I need you to sit with this stat for a second. One in five diners has already asked AI where they should eat. Not Google. Not Facebook. It’s ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. And here’s the harder number to swallow. Roughly 83% of restaurants don’t show up in those AI recommendations at all.

That’s exactly what my brand-new AI visibility study set out to measure.
As a digital marketing specialist, this is the kind of report I wish every restaurant owner in the city would read twice.
So let’s walk through what it found, and more importantly, what it means for your business.
The Niche Questions
The published report walks through several questions in detail:
- Anniversary dining
- Authentic Italian food
- Local favorites
- Best value for the money
- Best fine dining
- First-time visitors
The full set of prompts covered a much wider range of dining scenarios. These included everything from special occasions to everyday, budget-friendly meals.
One pattern stood out. The more detailed and specific the question became, the more AI platforms relied on rich, detailed business information to answer with confidence.
Thin or vague online listings simply don’t give AI enough context. When the question gets specific, AI has very little to work with.
If your restaurant hasn’t clearly explained what makes it ideal for a particular occasion, AI has to fill in the gaps. AI often prefers restaurants that clearly show details online. This applies whether you’re planning a romantic dinner, a business meeting, or a budget-friendly meal.
The Big Trends Across All 25 Questions
A few clear patterns emerged throughout the study. Restaurants with a strong digital presence appeared consistently across all three AI platforms. One finding stood out: AI recommendations depended more on a restaurant’s digital footprint than on its popularity alone.
That point is worth reading twice. Every AI recommendation is an opportunity to reach a potential customer. AI doesn’t judge your restaurant by how busy it is. It relies on the information available online. Even a new restaurant can appear in AI searches if that information is clear, complete, and consistent.
I also found clear differences between ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. All three tools were tested using the same questions under the same conditions. Even so, they didn’t always recommend the same restaurants. That means visibility isn’t just about ranking well on Google. It’s also about how your restaurant is represented across these AI models.
Which Restaurants Dominated

Some restaurant names appeared consistently across all three AI platforms. The study identifies these as high-agreement results because every platform recommended them for the same question.
- For anniversary dining: Bondi & Bourke, The Fat Cow, and Jack’s Ridge were recommended by all three AI platforms.
- For authentic Italian food: Il Giardino di Luciano, Lara Mia Café & Bistro, and Picobello Ristorante Italiano also appeared across all three.
- When asked about local favorites: Davao Dencia’s Restaurant, Lachi’s, and Yellow Fin Seafood Restaurant were the clear standouts.
What do these restaurants have in common? It’s not necessarily the biggest advertising budget or the trendiest branding. Instead, they have a strong and consistent digital presence.
Their online information reinforces the same identity, whether it’s their ambiance, authentic cuisine, or long-standing local reputation. That consistency gives AI enough confidence to recommend them independently.
Where AI Disagreed

Beyond the consensus picks, each AI platform had its own way of answering. That’s where the findings became especially interesting.
For the Italian food question:
- ChatGPT stayed close to traditional Italian cuisine.
- Google AI Overviews included some restaurants better known for Filipino or European-inspired dishes.
- Gemini also broadened the definition of “Italian” beyond strictly authentic Italian restaurants.
The anniversary recommendations showed a similar pattern:
- ChatGPT leaned toward romantic experiences, including places for after-dinner drinks.
- Google AI Overviews favored polished, chef-driven fine dining.
- Gemini often recommended heritage houses and restaurants with scenic, nostalgic settings.
These differences tell you something important. AI models aren’t relying on a single source of truth about your restaurant. Each platform interprets the available information differently and gives more weight to certain signals than others.
That means your goal isn’t to optimize for just one AI platform. Make your restaurant’s identity clear and consistent across the web. No matter which AI a customer uses, the information should still lead them to your business.
Closed Restaurants

Here’s the part that should make every restaurant owner pay attention. Some restaurants that had already closed were still being confidently recommended by AI.
For the anniversary dining question, AI recommended restaurants that were no longer operating, including:
- The White House
- Claude’s Le Café de Ville
The study is blunt about why this happens. A strong digital footprint can continue influencing AI recommendations long after a business has closed its doors.
That cuts both ways.
It’s proof that once you’ve built real digital authority, it has serious staying power. But it’s also a warning. AI doesn’t automatically know when your business changes.
If you rebrand, relocate, or close, outdated information can continue appearing in AI responses. Unless your listings, directories, and review platforms are updated, AI may keep recommending an old version of your restaurant.
What Restaurant Owners Should Learn

Pulling from the report’s own findings, here’s what I’d tell any restaurant owner reading this:
A strong digital footprint matters more than popularity alone
AI is more likely to trust businesses with complete, consistent, and well-documented information across the web.
Be specific about what your restaurant offers
Clearly describe your cuisine, ambiance, price range, and the occasions you’re best suited for. The more details AI has, the better it can match your restaurant to a customer’s question.
Don’t rely on just one AI platform
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews don’t always reach the same conclusions. Your restaurant should be visible and accurately represented across all of them.
Keep your online information up to date
If you’ve moved, rebranded, or closed, update your website, business listings, directories, and review platforms. Otherwise, AI may continue recommending outdated information.
Your reputation still matters
The “local favorites” results show that AI values years of positive reviews and community trust. Long-term credibility often carries more weight than short-lived trends.
AI recommendations will continue to evolve
This study captures a moment in time. As AI platforms update their models and data sources, the restaurants they recommend may change as well.
Methodology: How the Study Was Done
To keep things accurate, here’s how the actual study was run, based on what’s published in the report itself. Our team compared recommendations from the three AI models. We used the same set of customer questions under consistent testing conditions. The topics include special occasions, cuisine types, and local favorites.
Importantly, the report is upfront that this isn’t a ranking of the “best” restaurants in Davao. Instead, it’s a documented snapshot of what three AI platforms actually said when asked the same questions, contradictions, outdated info, and all.
Conclusions
Working on this study made one thing clear to me. AI is no longer a futuristic add-on to how people choose where to eat. It’s already becoming the new word of mouth for many diners in Davao.
The restaurants winning that conversation aren’t necessarily the ones serving the best food. They’re the ones with a clear digital identity. Their story, specialties, and strengths are easy for AI to understand and recommend.
If you’re wondering how your restaurant appears in AI, or why it isn’t showing up, we’d love to help. Our digital marketing services are built for today’s AI-driven search landscape.
Restaurant discovery is changing quickly. Make sure your business is part of the conversation.
