Many diners are now turning to AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Search. They ask questions like “Where are the best restaurants in Davao?” or “What’s a good budget-friendly spot?”. AI isn’t just ranking restaurants by star ratings. Instead, it’s classifying them based on themes, review keywords, and online context. If your restaurant isn’t one of them, you’re missing opportunities to attract new customers.

Here’s a look at my in-depth research on what AI platforms recommend across different dining in Davao. I will break down some real customer questions and compare the answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Search. 

But don’t think of this as a definitive list of the city’s best restaurants. Think of it as a window into how AI works. The primary goal here is to help both diners and business owners better understand how AI evaluates restaurants. It also reveals what influences a restaurant’s visibility across AI platforms.

Where should I eat in Davao

Some people start with a broad question like, “Where should I eat in Davao?” They may be dining for a family gathering, spending time with friends, or having a meal with clients. While that can generate useful suggestions, it doesn’t always reflect how diners make dining decisions. 

In my AI visibility study, I tested more specific, real-world questions instead:

• Gemini: Favored restaurants with a distinct identity and memorable atmosphere. Heritage buildings, farm-inspired venues, and panoramic views were common themes across its recommendations.

• Gemini: Prioritized restaurants that offered an authentic Davao seafood experience. Its recommendations consistently highlighted fresh local seafood and restaurants closely associated with the city’s food scene.

Best budget restaurant

Not every dining decision is about fine dining or special occasions. Sometimes, people simply want good food at a reasonable price. Other times, they’re looking for hidden gems that offer great value without the crowds.

For this part of my research, I used the following prompt: 

• Recommend a good restaurant under ₱500 per person in Davao City.
• What are the hidden gem restaurants in Davao City?

I wanted to see which restaurants consistently appeared and where the AI platforms differed. Here’s how ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Search responded.

• Gemini: Took a broader approach to affordability. Its recommendations included a mix of seafood, Japanese restaurants, and buffet options, showing that budget-friendly dining doesn’t have to be limited to one type of cuisine.

What are the hidden gem restaurants in Davao City?

• Google AI: Focused on restaurants with something different to offer. Many of its recommendations stood out because of their unique concepts, locations, or dining experiences.
• Gemini: Favored independently owned restaurants with a strong local identity. Regional dishes, unique concepts, and neighborhood appeal were common themes in its recommendations.

A Reminder About Outdated AI Recommendations

One interesting finding was that Gemini recommended “The White House”, “Claude’s Le Café de Ville”, and “Yurushi Restaurant”, even though these restaurants are no longer operating. 

This shows that AI can still surface outdated businesses when old information remains online. For restaurant owners, it’s a reminder to keep your business listings, website, and other online information up to date. Otherwise, outdated content may continue influencing AI recommendations.

Methodology Note

The recommendations in this article are a snapshot of how ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Search responded during my research. As these platforms evolve and their data sources change, future recommendations may also change.

What This Means for Restaurant Owners 

After going through all the questions and comparing the AI responses, a few things became clear: 

• AI doesn’t recommend every restaurant. It recommends the ones it understands best based on the information it finds online.
• The three AI platforms don’t think the same way. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Search often gave different answers to the exact same question.
• The way people ask the question matters. A broad search like “Where should I eat in Davao?” can produce very different results from asking about a family celebration, a business lunch, or a restaurant under ₱500. 
• Your digital presence matters. Restaurants with clear descriptions, accurate information, and a consistent online identity appeared more often across the AI platforms. 
• AI isn’t just looking for the “best” restaurant. It’s trying to match the restaurant to the diner’s situation, whether that’s a date night, a family gathering, or a budget-friendly meal.
• Outdated information can still affect AI recommendations. If your restaurant has moved, rebranded, or closed, make sure your online information reflects those changes. 

My biggest takeaway is this: AI can only recommend what it understands. The more clearly your restaurant is represented online, the better your chances of appearing when potential customers ask AI where to eat.
